How do I clean my Hardwood Floors?

There’s one question I get asked on almost every job.

How do I clean my Hardwood Floors?

So here’s my answer:

There are a lot of ideas out there on how to clean your hardwoods. Some are more complicated than others, but it’s really quite simple. Use a hardwood flooring cleaner and a microfiber mop with a wet and dry attachment.

So, go to your cleaning cabinet and throw away the vinegar and water, orange glow, Murphy’s oil soap, steam cleaners, and pretty much anything you ordered from an infomercial on TV. Stay away from anything that will leave a waxy or oily residue on your floors (orange glow and oil soaps) and follow these simple steps when you clean.

Simple Cleaning Steps

1. Sweep or vacuum to get rid of the big stuff.

2. Use your mop and dry attachment to pick up fine dust.

3. Mist a hardwood flooring cleaner on your floor and wipe it down with your mop and wet attachment.

Here’s some other things to keep in mind as well

1. If you need to spot clean your floor, use a rag, some elbow grease, and the same flooring cleaner.

2. If you want your floors to get even cleaner, it’s a good idea to get them deep-cleaned once/year. more info here.

3. If your floors have lost their luster, don’t turn to an infomercial, turn to a professional and have another coat put on. You don’t have to do a full refinish to make your floors shine again. more info here.

4. All floors will need to be refinished eventually. With a floor that is finished properly, you should expect to get 5-20 years of wear depending on traffic and maintenance. If you’d like to get much less wear out it and refinish it much sooner, just turn to steam cleaners and infomercials(: If you want more info on refinishing just go here.

5. What cleaners to use: Bona, Clark, and Glitza are all good brands you can find almost anywhere.
