A Family Legacy
At Totta Hardwoods, every floor we craft carries a story – one of family, hard work, and a love for timeless craftsmanship. Brothers Mike and Ben Totta grew up in the Kansas City metro area, surrounded by a large Italian family known for its entrepreneurial spirit.
From the family’s 100-year old sausage recipes that are still found in KC-area grocery stores to their aunt’s long-standing Italian restaurant in Independence, Missouri, the Totta name has always been tied to tradition, quality, and community.
That same spirit is at the heart of our work today. What began as a necessity for one brother became a passion shared by both – and ultimately, a family business dedicated to crafting beautiful, lasting hardwood floors for families across Kansas City.

Mike's Beginning
Mike first discovered hardwood flooring while in college, taking on small jobs to earn extra income. After returning to Kansas City and working in an inner-city ministry, he realized he needed a more reliable way to support his family. In 2006, he began sub-contracting flooring work, often renting tools from Home Depot and learning the trade as he went. What started as a way to make ends meet quickly became a calling rooted in craftsmanship and integrity.
Mike’s philosophy is simple: never compromise, always improve. Determined to master his craft, he sought formal training with the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA), transforming necessity into passion and expertise.
Today, as an NWFA Certified Wood Floor Inspector, Mike continues to embody Totta’s belief that true mastery has no finish line. His drive to learn through the Stair Manufacturers Association (SMA) and beyond reflects his vision for Totta Hardwoods — a company grounded in humility, fueled by craftsmanship, and always searching for new ways to better serve our customers.
Ben Joins In
A few years later, Ben – who had always loved working with his hands and once reproduced century-old balusters on a lathe when no replacement could be found – joined his brother. Though he initially pursued medical school, Ben quickly discovered that woodworking spoke to him in a way textbooks never could. By 2009, the brothers officially partnered to build Totta Hardwoods together.
Today, Ben serves as a regional instructor for the NWFA, where his natural gift for teaching and mentorship shines. Never one to guard his expertise, he embodies Totta’s belief that true mastery is shared. His dedication to training the next generation of craftsmen reflects the company’s deeper purpose — to elevate the industry with integrity, precision, and an unwavering respect for the craft.
